The New Orleans Hornets finished up the first half of the 2011-12 season with an 8-25 record, which has them in last place in the Southwest Division, 15.5 games behind the Spurs. The Hornets are #15 in the Western Conference right now, 9.5 games behind the Trailblazers for the last spot in the playoffs. Here is a look at the players who made the biggest impact in the first half of the 2011-12 season according to me:
Team MVP: Jarrett Jack: 28-year old point guard Jarrett Jack has replaced the departed Chris Paul and he has done a good job running the offense. Jack has played in 26 games (22 starts) for the Hornets so far this year and he is averaging 34.6 minutes, 15.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game.
Biggest Surprise: Gustavo Ayon: 26-year old undrafted rookie power forward Gustavo Ayon out of Mexico has exceeded all expectations for him. Ayon has played in 26 games (9 starts) for the Hornets so far this year and he is averaging 17.8 minutes, 5.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.0 steal per game. The Hornets hope he continues to play well in the second half of the year.
Biggest Disappointment: Al-Farouq Aminu: 21-year old small forward Al-Farouq Aminu was a key part of the return from the Clippers in the Chris Paul trade and he has been pretty awful this year. Aminu has played in 33 games (5 starts) for the Hornets so far this year and he is averaging 19.5 minutes, 5.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game. Aminu is only shooting 38.2% from the floor this year which is unacceptable for a player his size.
